This is a common bigot technique, y'all. "Can't we just reasonably discuss the fact that [group of people] aren't as human as the rest of us? We'll be polite and everything." No, motherfuckers, dehumanization ain't reasonable or polite.

I get the human urge to point at trainwrecks and other revolting things and gasp or go ewww. But we really need to treat some topics as too radioactive and *dangerous* even for that. When real terrorist attacks and rapes occur bc of this ish? Dangerous.
Show this thread -
"So how do we discuss this phenomenon then?" Easy -- don't discuss the dehumanizing beliefs. "Bob was spouting some horrifying incel nonsense. Did you know he actually believes -- ""I don't need to know what he believes. Bob is now persona non grata. Let's go."

(I would suggest we report Bob to the FBI, but we know the FBI is too busy looking under rocks for "black identity extremists" to care about people who are actually committing terrorist attacks.)

Anyway, I'm gonna go have some coffee and cleanse myself of evil with another playthrough of
@JanelleMonae's "Dirty Computer." Y'all have a nice weekend.Show this thread

It is so damned bizarre. I had no idea about incels until after the Toronto tragedy. The Genesis of "movements" like that are endlessly fascinating to me. Especially since the term was first used by a bisexual woman trying to self analyze her lack of success in dating/sex.
-
What did I just say?
-
It actually is important to discuss and understand where these ideas stem from. It's not useful to lay down rules about where & by whom & under what circumstances it's okay to discuss them. Yes, we need to understand them. Yes, we need to decry them as horrible. No contradiction
-
Well, thank you for 'splaining basic human interaction to me. I disagree, because you're assuming all humans are rational and that we live in a neutral society which does not tacitly encourage misogyny. But IDK, not like I'm a psychologist or anything, what do I know.
-
(I didn't think my tweet was 'splainy, but it obviously came across that way. I apologize - not my intention.)

Thank you; I appreciate the apology.

I honestly don’t know at this point if it’s more useful for people to at least know it’s out there or to ignore it like the stupidity it is.
-
I think it's fine for people to know it's out there. But the endless discussion? The clicking on links to mainstream sites that give them platforms? There will be more articles like this now.
-
Yeah. You can’t win, between exposing to the light and giving oxygen.
-
Yeah, I mean, we can *hope* that it kills the anaerobic toxic environment a la the Great Oxygenation, but there's always a chance that some of the toxic organisms will adapt and start toxifying *us* instead... aaaaaaand this metaphor is getting away from me. :)

We have to take off and nuke it from orbit. That's the only way to be sure.

Favor tungsten rods myself. No fallout, and after this generation dies out we can come back to remind people of why we left.

Anyone I hear saying this wouldn't have happened if girls were nicer etc and these losers had gotten laid is getting told by me "Okay so you volunteer for the job" it shuts them right the fuck up.
-
And even that kind of exchange spreads their ideas.
-
Think of vaccines. If you discuss a thing and say "here is why it is terrible..." Then when someone actually encounters the idea in the wild, they have the mental antibodies to deal with it.
-
Unless they're angry white guys looking for someone to blame for their troubles. Then they hear "here is why it is terrible" and they think, "wait, that doesn't sound bad to me, it *is* the women's fault." And then they go looking for an MRA forum.
-
And if they're of that mindset already, you won't do anything for them. They're infected by that meme. But the people *around* them? The little brother who sees his older brother acting a certain way? He can be helped by discussing why something is bad. He can be vaccinated.
-
That hasn't worked with any other set of alt right ideas; they've simply become normalized and no longer "unacceptable." But ok, you go on believing whatever you want to believe.
-
There's a sharpness in your tone that I don't think I earned, but...okay? Have a nice day.
