And as the books also pointed out, violent oppression was never the only choice society had. Stills could've just let orogenes be, in families (which could suppress kids' powers), in communities. As people. But given the choice between dehumanization and equality... ::sigh::

Idk if you were going for it but I thought the fact that they live in a world where their powers are hugely helpful and even necessary for human survival, the society had the choice to embrace them or hate them and choose the latter for no reason was demonstrative of your point

Like why not get them to help by just being nice and forming a positive symbiotic relationship rather than oppressing them? Because they wanted to oppress them

Interesting. I read it as showing the strength of your case by giving something massive to the other side: "But what if there really was a minority group that was genuinely, and dangerously, *other*? Could we oppress *them*?" "No, of course not, that would be terrible"

I thought of orogenes' danger as an allegory for the danger of personal initiative and collective action by oppressed people.

Anyone can be dangerous if pushed hard enough. "It's always the quiet ones," and all that. Orogenes made easy targets :(

It was painful to read that series in the midst of the BLM protests and really SEE the comparison. I wanted to shout out to everyone to read these books! Sadly I don't think the people who NEED to see the comparison would make the connection.

Given the choice between trust and mutuality (which will occasionally fail bc shit happens) vs control and violence (which also fails sometimes and requires orienting most of society around organized pain)... well, the Stills made the predictable choice.

I read it like "even if the arbitrarily oppressed group did have dangerous superpowers, that power is still broken and dispersed by carefully designed oppressive systems. Being able to shake the earth doesn't make you safe - respect and equity make you safe"
-
But as those oppressed, how to achieve respect & equality? Can't take it by force Can't "deserve" it Can't create it alone How can it arise under oppressors' fear & the anger fear creates? Must the oppressed simply survive & wait for cultural evolution?
