I am always baffled by people who flat out refuse to learn how to properly pronounce names- like....it's not that hard? Also it's just basic human dignity?

They're looking for reasons. Fell behind on their microaggression quota or something.

sweet baby cthulhu. Matthew Hubbard needs to not have a job interacting with living things.

Back when I taught I used to make sure to learn how to pronounce everyone's name in week one and if I was unfamiliar with a name I'd make a little pronunciation guide note in my grade book next to their name so I wouldn't get it wrong in the future.

JHFC. The majority of my students are international. I learn the names they want to be called. They forgive my accent and are surprised I try, which makes me sad. I should not be the rarity.

She probably waited until college with the assumption that there everybody would be adult about how it sounds and move on... So to hear from a professor--!

My god, that asshole. Every semester I learn every one of my students' names. It might take me a few weeks, but I do it. On Day One, I go through the roster and ask student to correct my pronunciation -- then I write it down phonetically in my roster book.

If they have a name they prefer to be called, I ask them to tell me, and that's what I write in my roster book and call them from then on. I have to announce before the roster that they shouldn't give me a nickname or an anglicized name if they think their name is "too hard."
