But... why does the track not just go straight downhill? Why loop at all?

Because the mountain is too steep. Trains aren't very good at slopes. All that weight plus too much slope is a disaster waiting to happen, in fact if this is the one in BC it exists BECAUSE a disaster DID happen.

In Italy the longest you could probably see is about 500mt. long. This one looks 3 or 4 times more

Trains in the US are commonly over a mile long and some lines are accommodating trains of 3 miles length.
