Happy palindrome day, whether you write the date DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY or even if you put the year first for some weird reason. 02/02/2020 is the only such date this century. The last one was over 900 years ago, on 11/11/1111. SO DON’T WASTE IT.

When the “Take On Me” chorus plays, is it just me, or does anyone else think he’s going to go through all the 3! permutations of these words?

Mostly useless but interesting trick: .NET Core knows how to inline structs and how to optimize them eg. by using SIMD registers. While case below is really a microoptimization, first method is ~20% faster than the second.

It's not every day that a read-after-write makes a server spend 4% of its CPU cycles in one instruction. Wrote that one up here:

What started as a long, detailed post about manually installing an HIE-based development environment with is now a much shorter post about how to get from zero to a Haskell IDE in a matter of minutes, thanks to devcontainers!

The new native memory access API in JDK14 is looking pretty cool. I like the way it eliminates manually calculating offsets and strides when accessing struct elements.

Worth noting that the Zulu 8 binary distribution of OpenJDK, has included JFR for a year+ now. In fact, much of the backporting was done by the Zulu team and upstreamed to the incubator project. Free, up to date, quality production bits of Zulu 8 w/JFR:

Scala program walks into the bar. Throws a checked exception. Throws an unchecked exception. Throws an error. Throws some odd ExecutionException interface... 😱 The bar crashes and burns.

TIL: G1 adaptive InitiatingHeapOccupancyPercent (default since JDK 9) can be the reason of longer, more frequent GC pauses, and higher CPU usage.

Interesting note re static analysis (SA): "SA hasn't been helpful in finding bugs in SQLite. SA has found a few bugs in SQLite, but those are the exceptions. More bugs have been introduced into SQLite while trying to get it to compile without warnings than have been found by SA"
