His professed love for birds is how he rationalizes smuggling them. And though he ridicules drug lords — he says trafficking endangered species is far more lucrative — he just wanted to own the birds. My story on a career that spanned decades & continents:

The lesson? I'm not sure. But I'm always amazed at how easy it is to steal art.

Now when police raid his place, they find much more than the vessel. He also stashed works by Klimt and Schiele in his parents' attic and his apartment as he was unable to "acquire what he was passionate about in a legal way," police told me. His sentence: 2 years on parole.

But years later, our thief wants to sell the vessel. He's asked about its provenance and checks if Art Loss Register, a database of stolen art, knows about it. They do. The inquiry (from an unheard-of client in Austria, where the vessel was stolen) seems very dodgy.

So, in 2012/13, he takes some of the stuff (like this vessel). Nobody notices. UNTIL 2 auction houses sell some of it, realize they shouldn't have because it's gone, and report it stolen to claim the insurance. That could have been the end of the story.

A little art heist story: An Austrian logistics company worker is "passionate" about art, but (like most of us) he can't afford the really good stuff. Luckily, his company rents storage space to another company that moves and stores the really good stuff. And he's got a key.

Today, a grassroots organization filed a petition of 170,000 people who oppose creating a new mega ski resort, which would require blowing up part of the Alps. I covered the pushback for Nat Geo two years ago:

. makes a very good point: You wouldn’t put “sports” in a headline on a sports story - so why would you put “climate” in there? It’s too general, and the story needs to be interesting in itself. (Plus: “climate” headlines don’t do well!)
