So You Want to Review/Discuss/Interview an Author Who Uses Nonbinary or Gender Neutral Pronouns: a (long) thread. Or: please stop misgendering nonbinary authors while talking about their nonbinary books, yikes.

Speaking As A Nonbinary Author, I’d say about 33% of reviews misgender me, despite the fact I’ve been out for a long time and my pronouns are easy to find (and used in all my books!) Taking 10 sec to double check an author’s pronouns before you post a review does a lot of good.

  10. Also, toss a coin to your nonbinary witcher and order their book. It's got queers, shitty bosses, and carnivorous furniture:

  11. (SIDENOTE, because I've seen this happen to other people: don't assume a gender nonconforming person uses neutral pronouns! It's super fucked-up, and I see it happen to binary trans people A LOT.)

  12. Ignoring my pronouns or debating their usage is not at all on the same level, but it sure as hell is part of the spectrum. SO! Make an effort. Be willing to be corrected. Practice, if you'll be speaking aloud. If someone uses neopronouns (ze/e/hir/etc), don't dismiss them.

  13. Trans people live in a world where SWATHS of our lives are treated as debates. Should I be allowed in public bathrooms? Should it be legal to fire me for not conforming to a binary gender? Should doctors be allowed to not treat me because my existence is "against their religion?"

  14. I'm still agog that I have to type this, but: if you want to show an author minimal respect while discussing their work, do not offer up aspects of their identity as a topic for debate amongst your cisgender followers. This is such a low bar. It's basically concave.

  15. I literally got tagged into a survey about whether a reviewer should use "they are" or "they is" to refer to me. And then someone argued with me when I told them that they were a) wrong about etymology and b) their preferences don't matter when I am the subject being discussed.

  16. Don't just flip a coin to decide whether to use "he" or "she", don't assume based on their name or appearance. For authors who changed their names or bylines, don't default to their old name. And for god's sake, don't crowdsource answers from the public.

  17. If you are in doubt about how to refer to an author, check their bio, press kit, or ASK. If you're unfamiliar with singular they and want guidance from language authorities, check AP, CMOS, APA, AMA, or Purdue OWL style guides, or the Merriam Webster and Oxford dictionaries.

  18. First off: my name, pronouns, and their correct usage are included in all my public bios. "Nino Cipri is [whatever]." "They are [a writer, whiskey enthusiast, leftist wingnut, etc]." "Their book FINNA [is cool af]."

  19. I'm not gonna talk about people's intentions -- I believe they've all acted in good faith. They still screwed up, and telling them so benefits them, me, readers, and other nonbinary authors they might review down the line. This isn't a callout post, but public education.

  20. While doing publicity for FINNA and HOMESICK, I've been getting frequently misgendered, or drawn into stressful convos where I have to educate people on how to write/talk about me without othering me. (Sidenote: at least these reviews get my characters' pronouns right?)
