I still struggle to understand OSS maintainership.
How does one become or continue as a maintainer _without burning out_ if it is not involved in their full-time job?
Most maintainers I know do it as a part of their day job.

Without funding, to survive as an OSS maintainer. It seems you need: 1. Deep test coverage 2. good documentation 3. clear goals for what the project will and will never do. 4. contribution guide 5. issue templates 6. code of conduct 7. self-help forum This helps offloads work.
