    Devngari is a script made for Sanskrit. Only used for Khari Boli from mid 19c. ष is a Skt sound but used as legacy.

    I thought problem with ಶ and ಷ is in Kannada only. Why do we need two letters when we pronounce them same?

    You can see it in Hindi with बहन. Spelling captures old pronunciation (bahan). But Std Hindi pronunciation (Delhi) is now behen. Sound shift

    Why Hindi orthography is *more* phonetic than English is cos its script is very, very new. No time for sound shifts etc to take place.

    Not really. The अ in शहर and मन for example are pronounced differently.

    In Hindi ऊ is always ऊ not like English where pronunciation of u is different in "put" & "but". Even then english people are worst w/ Hindi.
