I know this is the wrong place to ask this, but since I retweeted, I'm now wondering how this is behavior different from using a generic arg with a where clause? I changed the example and both work.

Wouldn‘t it make more sense to allow them in associated types then, as that also gives you a named type then and it‘s more consistent with how you can have changeable return types at the moment in traits.
