The fact that car culture is so ingrained in our country that people can't even conceive of people who dislike driving is so fucked uphttps://twitter.com/asymmetricinfo/status/1102274962226847744 …

Which brings us to the important point: unless you're ideologically devoted to environmentalism, the only reason you would prefer transit to cars is congestion. (There are people who take transit rather than driving because they can't afford a car, but they don't *prefer* to)

Driving is mentally taxing, requires constant concentration, and is dangerous. Sometimes it's necessary, and that's okay, but many people take transit -- even inconvenient transit -- because it's just *nicer*

You don't need to match the efficiency of a car route for having transit people will take. You need to come decently close. Nobody cares about five minutes. This tweet thread reads like those "universal healthcare won't work" takes but for transit.

Also if you don't believe that people who own cars will like transit that is inconvenient, readhttps://twitter.com/ManishEarth/status/1102390840419336193?s=19 …

This is not an uncommon sentiment, and it surprises me that you don't know that. I have a friend in the south bay who drives all the time. Once she came up to SF by train, she found it so much less stressful even though it took longer. She's *used* to driving and still hates it.

Now to be fair she's from Mumbai and thus has seen a world without car culture, but she's still driven in the States for the past few years and thinks nothing of it. And yet she vastly preferred taking a longer train ride where she could read.

and y'all can say that this doesn't work for buses -- Megan later clarifies that she's mostly talking about buses -- except Caltrain is like ... really really inconvenient what with its terrible headway. I love transit and yet I despise having to take it.

Also, go take a bus in Zurich sometime (and doubtless other cities). Busses don't have to be unpleasant at all, matter of priorities.

Yeah, buses can be amazing. I often choose to take the transbay express home over the BART, and it's always more pleasant. It's longer, and the 30min headways mean I have to time it, but it's still pretty great.

the transbay express is a special bus (also the berkeley one is now double decker which makes me really happy) and the normal AC Transit buses aren't as pleasant, but they're still pretty good imo
