If only there were a literary borrowck to prevent those dangling references.
I feel that if a book is a sequel it should be required by law to say so on the cover (ideally to say "book N of the M series"). I hate buying a book, starting to read it, and then encountering all sorts of references to previous adventures with the same characters.
