a lot of the students who 'work' 70 hours a week actually spend a substantial portion of that time watching netflix, playing video games, facebook and a million other things. This is especially true in comp bio spaces.

I'm not a PI, but informally mentor a a lot of graduate students. The thing I try to emphasize to them is (1) that its important to run your own race, and (2) its important that you feel supported in doing this.

45 hours a week is enough. Manage your time, stay focused and take breaks as you need them. Take 1 or 2 days COMPLETELY OFF, every week. Keep track of your achievements and celebrate them. Keep track of what's left to do and remind yourself you can do it. You got this

This might seem a bit archaic, but I believe that academics have a duty of care for their students. I would be discussing work-life balance and also allaying fears if someone was worrying about hours in the lab . A PhD is assessed by its addition to knowledge, not time sheets.

Our supervisors say that they expect us to work full time (40h/week), but in reality they expect us to work 50-60 h/week. We've (unofficially) named ourselves "the Zombie lab".
-
But imo a problem here is that we're expected to take courses, go to/hold presentations, read, etc. But our supervisors don't count that as "work", but rather something we should do in our spare time because we "love" science.

That's garbage. That PI is mistaken. Hours worked has no correlation with scientific productivity. Some of my best scientists worked 9am-5pm, had hobbies, families.
-
Agree with everyone. That PI is talking nonsense. And wearing hours in lab as a badge of pride is dangerous. Mental health and W-L balance are important. And the benefit of science is freedom! Sure, some experiments may take 12h, but you don't do these every day (nor should you)!

I finished my PhD last June. I did 9 hours a day 5 days a week on average. I passed with minor corrections and am a postdoc now ^_^ (And Dr Rabaiotti to boot!)

My advice is to work the hours that make you most productive. Take plenty of breaks if you need them!
