  2. The goal is for tenants to be able to stay in their homes, not just as renters but as homeowners. It's also about curbing displacement & reducing homelessness, putting people before real estate speculators.

  8. 73% of Oakland homeless encampment residents are formerly incarcerated. This law will reduce the rising rate of homelessness. It will help people first get on solid ground to then get a stable job, access educational opportunities, heal + move forward. 1st such law in California!

  17. My statement on why . Throughout history, what is just, moral and humane has not always aligned with the law. It was once legal to redline Black communities, preventing them from accessing mortgage loans to buy homes.

  18. I will work with Council on policy to ensure vacant homes are used for housing. Today at Council, we are voting on housing policy including: Fair Chance Housing so formerly incarcerated community members can secure homes, condo conversion, affordable housing devt loans.

  19. We can fix the system by taking homes off speculative market, making them permanently affordable. Last year, w we created $12M fund in so tenants can purchase homes w land trusts. Sell, donate your home to community. Banks: recapitalize our fund.

  20. Remember, while sat vacant for 2 years, homelessness in Oakland increased 47%. The Oakland is $40/hr for 2 bedrooms. These rents are out of reach for working . Housing is not a commodity. This is a moral and systemic crisis & call to action.
