50 years ago tonight, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in the city to stand with striking sanitation workers who were protesting low wages, racial discrimination, and adverse working conditions. #MLK50

The night before his death, in what would be his last sermon at Memphis’s Mason Temple, he told those assembled to “develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness” by marching in solidarity with the sanitation workers.

He continued: “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation.”

America was founded on basic principles of equality, acceptance and unity – all tenets embodied by Dr. King. His undeterred courage and his searingly eloquent message of our universal humanity were not only timely but they are timeless as well.
