Yes. And also an iterative feedback loop that yields both constancy and nimbleness. This is race as a social construction.

  3. Americans are at their best, turning situations of carnage for which they bear heavy responsibility into scenes of their own redemption. It’s been a long march from the Central Park 5.

Yes, and this is why this remains one of the best opeds on the nature of US governance since 2016

Something big is happening across the country. We’re going to finish the political revolution we started.

As Hannah Arendt pointed out, politics is a domain not just of facts but of world-shaping action. Denying that the front-runner can unify a party is not helpfully pointing out a stone in the road; it's erecting a roadblock. This is a fight over action, over what country to create

Honestly, both of these books sound flawed-treating democracy as a portentous experiment, racial justice more than barely begun, with economic class left out (except belatedly for whites), and “polarization” as an evasion of the failure of politics to serve working people.

Senate acquittal will leave Trump a weak, unpopular, plutocratic president who needs to be voted out. Any talk of his becoming a “monarch” or “dictator” because his minority-rule party wouldn’t expel him is irresponsible and distracting.

Watching people who pride themselves on being liberal or anti-racist scold a Palestinian woman for not bowing to one of her people's most shameless tormentors is honestly one of the grossest things I've seen on this already notoriously gross website.

Anyone who studies US foreign relations is familiar with this 1972 dialogue between Nixon & Kissinger. Still, it remains shocking to read them casually discuss killing tens of thousands of people, as if it were just a betting strategy in No Limit poker — which, in a way, it was.

In Iowa, closes the show for with a strikingly poignant version of Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are A-Changin’. The young, energetic crowd of more than 2500 embraced this message in particular as they prepared for Monday’s caucuses.

The pearl-clutching tour de force from liberals re the Rashida Tlaib - Hillary episode is a perfect distillation of where they see progressives. They can attack the Left all the time, but the moment one responds it’ll be out of line. For them, unity means Left subservience.

“The real genre of these proceedings is the playing out of a foregone conclusion. This is a show trial with a twist—a public ritual not of preordained condemnation but of preordained exoneration.”

Almost seems like baiting in hopes of sowing acrimony ahead of the caucus. It’s not petty, of course; it’s political: she doesn’t want a leftist insurgency to ascend in the Dem party.
