I just submitted my application to PCC to become a NACO Minnesota funnel member. Because if there's one thing I don't already have enough of it's listservs to which I'm subscribed. 🤣
Genuinely excited about (potentially) becoming a NACO member though!!

Some of my friends are discussing why Harrison Ford is still playing Indiana Jones but honestly, having an 80-year-old professor not retire is like the most accurate part of the franchise

It's always a good feeling whenever I can still select the 31-39 age range. 😅

It's always a good day when there's some original cataloging to do. 😁

Feeling a tad under the weather today so working from home and blasting Mozart symphonies 39-41 (K. 543, 550 and 551) in the living room. These three pieces are like musical liquid sunshine.

You know what makes a terrific glue well while making repairs: coffee lids. 😃

Is there a non-racist alternative to "Orientalism"? It seems there's general agreement that it's racist af but doesn't appear to be a big push by LC to replace it, and I haven't been able to find one. And that's a huge chunk of humanity reduced to one dodgy grouping. 🤨

Is a "Cultural Humility" statement a potentially better option than a "Land Acknowledgement" statement (h/t )?

"Too diverse" = "No longer predominantly White"
Fun fact: According to APM Research Lab, "Minnesota is home to some of the nation’s worst race-based disparities in employment and homeownership" (bit.ly/3CHYwTt). 🫤
So proud of my home state. 🙄

Some geographical names like this one still need to be reviewed and changed by the :

Oh, hello, #socialanxiety. I forgot you go to these library conferences, too.
Right, you really like hanging out during breaks when everyone's mingling with colleagues and friends, while I go to the next session room and have a mini #panicattack.
Where did my friend Ativan go??

Not to harp on this too much, but (while well-intentioned) I find land acknowledgement statements without action problematic. Yes, we need to call out colonialism and white supremacy, but it needs to go further. The article below has ideas.

New board game recommendations is one of the last things I would've expected to get at a library keynote, and I AM HERE FOR IT. 😃
I'll need to think about how the idea of "disposable ends" could apply to cataloging and metadata…

At the keynote talk this morning, shared a game about inventing your own sign language to communicate with others based on the development of Nicaraguan Sign Language.
Best of all, it's played in complete silence. 😃

I can understand the frustration of an actor not wanting to be filmed illegally during a performance, but this person missed some contextual clues… namely, that she wasn't trying to hide the captioning device. We need greater #DisabilityAwareness and equity.

Today, an actor yelled at me multiple times mid-show for recording a Broadway show, even when I wasn’t.
I was using a captioning device.
My worst nightmare realized.

Headed to the airport in a shuttle and am riding with a couple from southern Minnesota.
Lost track of how many times the woman has said "Ohhh, ja…", and the guy sounds like a Norwegian bachelor farmer.
This may be one of the most Minnesota conversation I've ever heard. 😄

Currently in a microaggressions workshop with twenty participants-- and I'm the only guy. Not to generalize from a single instance, but how many men are engaging in anti-racism/EDI work? 🫤

Me, when catalogers add fixed fields that are TECHNICALLY not wrong but are absolutely not necessary. Like a 306 field for a print book. 😑

Lizzo nerding out about history on stage while playing a 200-year-old crystal flute once owned by a dead white guy (James Madison) is a mood. 😊

Many of you following along with #LizzoAtLOC were surprised that the Library has a flute vault. We are the largest Library in the world & home to more than 173 million objects, so there are many more surprises like that in our collections. Enjoy this thread of just a few of them.

The update on RDA representative expressions yesterday at the ALA Authority Control Interest Group meeting yesterday did nothing to improve my feeling about the new RDA. Or RDA in general...

Still not sure what to think about this...
"EBSCO will tailor FOLIO, a community-developed open-source library services solution, to provide a library service platform that meets the Library's IT requirements and the needs of the Library's users."
1
The proposal was to correct some access points: the record had the author of the original (adult) version listed as the primary access point, while RDA advises us to use the adapters instead (6.27.1.5). It's not sexy or earth-moving, but it's still important to get right.

Received a reply today from the Library of Congress to say that a proposed edit I'd made in June regarding the access points for "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States for Young People" has been made! 🥳

I feel like an evil cataloger would be akin to Wanda Maximoff taken over by the Darkhold--enforcing RDA, PCC, and the like on the library community with fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to upholding the rules.

A REMINDER!
We need diverse representation not *only* so every kid can see themselves as the hero of the story, but also so that every kid can understand that *other* kinds of kids are *also* the heroes of the story.

One thing I don't miss about in-person conferences: the high costs of getting there, attending, and finding somewhere to occasionally sleep. 😵
That said, I hope you to see some of you in person (albeit likely still masked) at the Forum in Salt Lake City in October! 🥳
