just watched a white woman describe in detail how she asked her students (who were repeatedly interpellated as POC, immigrant, and working class) to "justify slavery" as a thought experiment in her class. closing out #scsaia2021 with a bang
thanks to some people in the question section who rightly expressed this was disturbing. as one person wrote, "it seems like a significant shift from desiring to not omit history to asking them to justify slavery from perspectives of the oppressors and the oppressed"
for reasons beyond me, classicists STILL fail to realize how inappropriate the question is ("was [X genocide] justified"). the presenter stressed that ancient slavery was not racebased; however the logic of modern slavery makes the q "was ancient slavery justified" possible
as @dugankp pointed out in a panel yesterday, “racism exists & is in play regardless of intention." I don't want this particular presentation to take away from others in the panel, but it was sad to see her get defensive after people expressed how hurtful this framing was

unfortunately no, she made a lot of excuses, stressed her good intentions, and weaponized an aspect of her identity (class background) as an excuse. as someone who is also from a working class family, I found it especially objectionable
