feeling sorry for the people in SF tonight. they still have to go to their $250k/yr jobs tomorrow to optimize the conversion rate of that one button their entire floor is responsible for

when playboi carti said “what” he was distilling the 21st century zeitgeist into a monosyllabic time capsule, in one breath bottling the abject confusion and exhaustion brought on by interminable war, (mis)information overload, and sisyphean work ethic demanded by late capitalism

in 1925, david hilbert said in a lecture to the next generation of mathematicians: "no one will drive us from the paradise which cantor created for us" ✨

this proof was published by georg cantor in 1891. cantor created set theory, the notion of an "uncountable set", as well as the idea of cardinality & levels of infinities. his proofs were very controversial during his lifetime but were then largely accepted by the math community

clearly the natural and real numbers are both infinite. but the reals are "more infinite" in a sense, since they can't be listed. this notion of "levels of infinity" is called cardinality: the real numbers have a higher cardinality than the reals

even if we go back to the original infinite list and place at the top this new real number (blue), we can simply perform this whole diagonalization process again to find a new real number that was not in the original list. hence, it is impossible to list all of the real numbers

here's the kicker: if we add one (+1) to each digit of our number (red), the resulting number (blue) is now different than ALL of the random numbers we listed originally by AT LEAST one digit. so we couldn't have possibly listed all the numbers between 0 and 1 in the first place

we then trace an infinite diagonal line starting after the decimal of the first number, grabbing one digit from each real. at the bottom you can see a real number that is built off the digits formed by this diagonal. this number will be important in the next step

we can actually prove this using only the real numbers between 0 and 1. here we go: imagine we randomly list every possible real number between 0 and 1. here's the beginning of that list:

why would anyone want to prove that, you ask? because if we can determine the real numbers are "unlistable", that would mean they are fundamentally larger, or "more infinite", than the natural numbers. that would be very interesting to mathematicians and folks on twitter like you

the idea of the proof is to show that the natural numbers (i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4...) cannot be put in one-to-one correspondence with the real numbers (i.e. 0, 0.25, 1, √2, π...). that is, show that the real numbers cannot be placed on a list like the natural numbers can
