My own WIFE didn't get my video notification until 8 hours after publishing. She watches every video. Every. Single. One. Indefensible @TeamYouTube 🤣pic.twitter.com/RIllilMASM

Did you publish at a time when she’s not typically watching YouTube? I know they try to optimize for many factors, not just “does this person watch every video from this channel” so if you launched your video overnight in her time zone they would typically hold that notification

Most of my videos are released around midnight CEST. Many viewers of mine watch around that time, so I'm not sure it's "late enough" for them to hold back notifications... but even if they were, I completely disagree with the logic. I want people to receive notifs immediately.

And seeing as though much of a video's momentum is driven by its viewership and engagement in the first few hours, I'd consider it detrimental to "strategically" withhold notifications.

Yeah I hear ya 100% on that one. It's obvious at this time that YouTube's primary goal is NOT "get this creator's video the number of views that they expect," but it has shifted very strongly to "get users to stay on the platform no matter what"

So the logic behind withholding the notification would be that they KNOW she'll open the app when they send your notif, and they try to optimize for when they assume she'd have time to click through to more videos after yours

Right. Yeah, makes sense (at least in YT's eyes, I suppose). I wonder what the thinking is behind optimal treatment for the viewer vs. the creator. Obviously, YT needs creators to survive, but the platform is so saturated now that they may not even care.

I don't think it's a lack of care... the humans that we know at YT care very deeply about the success of creators. I think stuff like Adpocalypse has made them pretty gunshy tbh. Many MAJOR creators were in violation of new guidelines, which = lower rev for YT

So by making the platform more malleable and less focused on individual channels or creators, they're preparing themselves to weather any other "Adpocalypse-esque" storm. It feels terrible from a human perspective, but is logical from a biz one.

But by nature of choosing to optimize notifications for viewers at the expense of the creator's long-term success, they are, in fact, showing us who they care more about. That's my point.
