At the LAX Muslim Ban protest in 2017, several white women screamed at us, “Go back to where you came from!” The march was led by Native and Tongva people who did a welcoming ceremony for Muslim relatives, most of whom were Black.
Trump’s call for four Congresswomen to “go back” to where they came from is accompanied by actual policy enacting violent removal and sometimes killing of people. There is no innocence to settler colonialism or the founding of this country that was always based on exclusion.
Back in 2014 when I interviewed Native folks on the streets of ABQ, they frequently told me cops (not just white cops) would tell them to “Go back to the reservation!” This system isn’t confused about what it’s about. Nor are the people who enforce its order.
I wouldn’t even know where to go.
