I will forever be grateful for the support, candid advice and generosity she showed to me during my time as Lib Dem leader and beyond. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

But her principles were lost on some...

What a surprise, someone using a perfectly decent post from someone as a chance to go on the attack. Some people. Have some decency, please.

Who’s Shirley?

Vera Brittan’s daughter of course and I’m not even British.

A sad loss to the nation and beyond. We'll see if the passing of an elected public servant will have any where near as much impact on the media as that of an hereditary one...

I absolutely agree, Danny Barrs - I am also far more interested in the life and times of Shirley Williams - BBC, you have already had thousands of complaints about your ubiquitous coverage of the royal passing - I look forward to seeing and hearing of Shirley Williams.

Shirley Williams has been an inspiration to me and so many others and I am sorry for that she is gone from this world. Her thinking, intelligence and intrinsic humanity is needed more than it ever was. RIP Shirley Williams.

Shirley Williams as a founder of the SDP was a political Lioness of her time. In 1982 at the Crosby By-Election I was honoured to have assisted in her campaign and listened to her speeches .A devout Catholic no doubt in heaven now.
