Rarely have the two major parties been united in such blind denial about what the future holds. 2/2

Are Corbyn and May mutating into each other? He says he wants to end austerity, but that’s not possible with Brexit. She says she wants a country that works for everyone, but that’s not possible with Brexit. Brexit will hit the public finances and the poorest the hardest. 1/2

Alert: plastic bag theft. Daily Mail - once again - claims front page victory today for plastic bag tax. When I introduced the levy in government - despite much Conservative scepticism - Darth Dacre played no role at all. Never let the facts get in the way of self-importance...

Brexiteers demanded we take back control, but instead we risking losing control of Ireland’s carefully constructed peace & its invisible border. My article after my visit to Dublin

If losing Ireland’s invisible border is the price of Brexit then MPs must reject the final Brexit deal. They must do so without, contrary to some suggestions, the votes of Sinn Fein MPs. Their presence in Westminster would not help. My column:

Here we go again: HMG raises the white flag in Brussels, yet it will no doubt be hailed as a triumph. This is shaping up to be an embarrassing Brexit delivered at all costs. Is this humiliation really what people voted for?

Innovation at a local level is the best way to tackle social mobility in this country. That’s why the Chancellor should use his Spring Statement to ease financial constraints on local authorities & let them act creatively. My article:

PM’s speech is a bit like someone who used to say they wanted to move out of their home to a shiny new one, but end up moving into the attic of the house they lived in all along. Except this time they still pay for the bills while following the rules set by others.

John Major is absolutely right. It's high time that Parliament, and not a hard Brexit clique, spoke for our country.

So the Brexiteers are now blaming the EU for a problem of the government's own creation. Remember: a hard Brexit creates a new hard land border with the EU which never existed before. Hard Brexiteers are the architects of a hard border, no-one else.

So Customs Union is not the full answer to Irish border issue. That's why Corbyn needs to go one step further re Single Market. 2/2

Up to 17km queues and 30 hour waits at the Turkish/Bulgarian (EU) border show that a Customs Union only gets you so far. Customs Union without Single Market, just as Single Market without Customs Union (see checks at the Norway/Sweden border), leads to delays and queues. 1/2

The government’s basket-based Brexit strategy is both unworkable and profoundly un-Conservative. My latest column:

Heartbreaking to see Alfie Dingley denied life-changing medicine. Instead of sticking to outdated rules, the Home Secretary could table a simple change to the law to allow doctors to decide when to prescribe cannabis.
