From an article my mom wrote 20 years ago about what my parents did to support my interest in computers and programming:

Apropos of nothing, seems like the world could use a few more thoughtful people to build reliable, ethical software for our big challenges!

So what this means is that a President can use the full powers of his office, including withholding foreign aid, to ensure his reelection and the only way to check that conduct is by winning the election that the President rigged in his own favor.

After doing a one-week retreat in 2018, Thais () came back to RC for a full batch! Read more about what they worked on, how they approach programming, and their thoughts about the RC community on our blog:

One of our application questions is “What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned in the past month?” Reading those answers is one of our favorite parts of application review, and we’ve collected our top hits from 2019 to share (we got everyone’s permission first😉)! (1/14)

Recurse Center is a great program for helping people either get into programming for the first time, or dive deeper on a particular skill set. (Here's a blog post I wrote from my one-week residency there: ) These grants look *awesome*. Spread the word!

📢 We offer grants of up to $7,000 to folks from groups that are underrepresented in programming who do a batch at RC. Tell your friends! 💻 RC is free for everyone: our grants cover living/travel expenses that would prevent someone from attending.

When Recursers finish a batch, they sometimes (spontaneously! We don't tell people what to do.) write 'return statements' about their time at RC. Here are a few recent ones we loved:

The Fall 2 batch introduced a new tradition to RC: a zine! With three themed issues, contributions from alums, and a risograph-printed season finale - not to mention a custom zine formatting script written by Aidan - we look forward to adding future editions to the RC library.

  11. 2020 marks 10 years since I quit my job to start , 8 years since I met (and later married) , and 1 year since we welcomed baby James. By far the three biggest and best inflection points of the decade for me.

At RC, structural engineer built an app to let engineers visualize geometric constraints on gusset plates and test the capacity of connections. She also worked on version control apps for structural analysis models and became a foster parent to a litter of kittens!

  19. What does "really hard" mean? I know of people who stopped showing up and/or basically stopped doing any work, but don't get fired (or only get fired months later when someone notices).

  20. One thing to thing to keep in mind when you see a story of a Google engineer being fired and Google claims it's because of some technicality or supposed policy: It's actually *really hard* to get fired from Google (at least for engineers)!
