    Notable: Poverty *fell* in the US last year after the federal government stepped in with aid that included enhanced unemployment benefits and stimulus checks. Consistent with emerging research about impact of 2020 federal assistance (this doesn’t include this year’s stimulus)

    3. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) extends the official poverty measure to include the value of noncash benefits, stimulus payments, taxes, and other necessary expenses. The SPM rate in 2020 was 9.1 percent. This was 2.6 percentage points lower than 2019.

    Trade is fun AND gives you a great background for being able to go deep and well-informed on future consumer coverage (if that’s your goal!) Trust me, the average consumer was not concerned about third-party delivery commissions or slim restaurant operating margins two years ago.

    Work at a trade publication instead of going to grad school for journalism. Work with whomever will hire you, even if you’ve never heard of them and no one you know reads them. You’ll learn a lot more about journalism and skip the debt.

    This is really good advice. After being purged from Naderite "public interest" journalism because I preferred reporting to editorializing, I worked in the maritime press for years. And I learned everything I needed to do actual investigative work. You don't need J-school. At all.

    Work at a trade publication instead of going to grad school for journalism. Work with whomever will hire you, even if you’ve never heard of them and no one you know reads them. You’ll learn a lot more about journalism and skip the debt.
