    4) In the mad pursuit, we ignore the most important things in our lives - our loved ones, our life interests, our health, peace, happiness..and trade them for unhealthy competition, envy, angst, stress, bad health, dealing with people we don't like, doing things we hate, meetings

Remember, when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. It’s the same when you use tabs and not spaces.

A surprisingly underrated tactic that you can do to review anything: Think of a panel of, say, five people you’d ask about the artifact whose advice you’d almost certainly take. It can be almost literally anyone. Then, write down what they’d tell you if you asked them.

Yeah, that one. I wish I could make 's 2013 talk mandatory viewing for bootstrappers: This talk is directly responsible for a six-digit difference in my net worth; seven if I'd taken it to heart earlier. Market first! Plan! Please!

An entrepreneur’s job is not to come up with ideas. It’s to _recognize_ opportunities for viable businesses, _execute_ on them, and overcome the roadblocks/hurdles that most people would get stuck on.

For someone trying to make self-employment a sustainable lifestyle, a 50% chance to make $10K/mo is almost always better than a 5% chance to make $1M/mo (despite the higher expected value). The speculative bets can be pursued after sustainability is ensured. The order matters.

As a community we don't support those volunteers, but instead we act with the entitlement for their work and expect them to fix our problems. The great, magical thing of open source ended up being a way for corporations not to build or not to pay for their libraries themselves.

You know that part of your talk where you introduce yourself and then describe what you're going to cover? Skip it. Instead, dive immediately into the main thing you want people to learn and remember. Get to the point and stay there.

Kids go to school thinking they’re going to be astronauts or lawyers or entertainers, never knowing that most jobs are just sending emails until you die

Almost all specific advice is survivorship bias. Instead of trying to learn how to be good at predicting what will work (validating ideas), it’s much better to learn how to stay in the game (by making small bets, not depending on one thing, adapting to new info, etc).

Most important lesson I learned about entrepreneurship: You can’t predict the future. You can’t predict what will work. You can’t predict what will last. So the only viable strategy in all this uncertainty is to survive long enough to stumble on good opportunities.

You can also watch a lot of developers “spend thousands in a vain attempt to save hundreds” just by putting a usage-based price tag on something. (It doesn’t even have to be denominated in money; we’ll golf any available metric.)

An observation about being in mid thirties with kids: previously, I would benchmark “I think I want to spend ~5 years on X” against a 45 year career, but these days, it’s against “How many years do I have with the kids at home?”, which is a comparative eyeblink.
