I just got robbed at gunpoint right next to my house in San Francisco 2 hours ago. They took everything - phone, work laptop, wallet, documents, etc. Congrats, @chesaboudin, you are winning.

Ug this makes me so sad. I hope it isn't viewed as a victimless property crime.

Property crimes are not viewed as victimless. Someone owns the property and the owner is the victim. But this is an armed robbery - it is a violent and dangerous crime. It is exactly the kind of crime I've committed to prioritizing.

Thank you for responding @chesaboudin. SF is my hometown and it breaks my heart to see how much crime has become the new normal. Is there anything residents & citizens can do to help?

For starters, it would be good to share accurate information. I don’t know what new normal means, but I do know violent crime is down and approaching 20 year lows. Property crime is down but still way above nat’l average. You must define the problem before prescribing a solution.

      (1) looks like violent crime is projected +5% and thefts from cars is way up from 2016? (2) SF routinely ranks amongst the highest in per capita property crime among large cities. sources: (1) https://sfgov.org/scorecards/public-safety/violent-crime-rate-and-property-crime-rate … (2) https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/The-Scanner-San-Francisco-ranks-No-1-in-13267113.php …

Projections. Less important than real data. SFPD data: Homicides in San Francisco are flirting with a 50 year low, and violent crime categories were not only down last year, they are down again, so far, this year.https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/08/21/san-francisco-crime-at-lowest-level-in-decades-officials-say/ …

Jan ‘20: released crime data show that violent crime in San Francisco dropped by 6 percent last year compared to the previous year, police said Tuesday. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san-francisco/san-francisco-officials-unveil-new-crime-stats/2218901/ …

So as I said, define the problem before offering a solution. Problem: property crime Solution: bifurcated approach as the DA has defined. Violent crime obviously requires vigilance. But don’t conflate the approach to car breakins with how SF is dealing with violent crime.
