In their meeting with government officials, Indigenous leaders from Association of Indigenous Village Leaders in Suriname (VIDS) and the Organization of Cooperating Indigenous Villages in Para, Wanica and Commewijne (OSIP) made several demands:
- REPEAL of all land titles issued in Indigenous territories, with written evidence that they have indeed been withdrawn
- Independent INVESTIGATION into the circumstances of fatalities
- State ASSISTANCE in funeral expenses of the persons who have died
- State assistance and GUIDANCE for survivors and victims
- RELEASE of those arrested who have been wrongfully or unlawfully arrested.
Suriname's government appears to consider the eruption in the vicinity of Pikin Saron merely as a criminal matter and refuses to take any responsibility for what has occurred.

Kaliña and Lokono Peoples v. Suriname
In 2015, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found that Suriname had violated the rights of the Indigenous Peoples who have called Suriname home long before it was colonized. It made seven key recommendations which ranged from recognition of the Kaliña and Lokono Peoples as legal persons under the law to eliminating legal impediments to safe governance of their own territory to reviewing with them with effective and full consultation mining activities authorized on nature reserves within Indigenous lands, among others.

In a region of Suriname called Pikin Saron, Indigenous protesters clashed on may 2 with police. This event follows decades of infringement on the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Suriname and inaction on the Kaliña & Lokono verdict of 2015 from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR). Two Indigenous men were killed during the altercation with police and an emergency meeting between government officials and Indigenous leaders was held.
