URGENT: we are hearing credible reports of detentions at US borders, both of Iranian Americans and permanent residents. We are working to independently verify, coordinating with lawmakers & allies. If you have information please share it directly with us at info@niacouncil.org
We are still in the info-gathering stage, but reports suggest that many individuals of Iranian heritage have been detained for questioning at ports of entry - both at airports and border crossings. Most reports are originating from the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine, WA.

Members of Congress and other immigration and community-based organizations and activists are hearing the same reports, and we are seeking to connect individuals impacted with legislators in order to secure their release and halt unwarranted and discriminatory detentions.

Most individuals appear to have been detained for hours (up to 11-16, but also for shorter durations) and subjected to questioning as a result of their national heritage. Some of these individuals have been released. We do not know how many are still in detention.

The common denominator is Iranian heritage, which should raise concerns of discriminatory and illegal actions targeting on the basis of national origin. This is no surprise coming from this administration, which instituted a Muslim ban in its first week

Moreover, in August - after an attack on a Saudi oil facility the administration attributed to Iran - a number of Iranians with student visas either had those visas canceled at the airport or were subsequently deported upon landing.

Any detentions do you mean they prolonged questioning or that they are actually not letting Iranian-Americans and permanent residents go at all?
