The above are examples from just the past 3 months. They reflect a harmful trend toward corporate seizure of the state. Politicians bend to the will of large companies and developers by investing taxpayer money into massive projects that may or may not come to fruition.

But rather than see these examples as a cautionary tale or look for alternative economic development models, Gov. Cuomo is doubling down on bringing Amazon to Queens by spending upwards of $50k on a full-page ad in the New York Times.

I just want to add Dallas to the list to show how backwards corporate tax incentives as an economic development have become. In the early 2000s, the city lost a bid for Boeing's new headquarters. Chicago was chosen instead because Dallas' business district lacked nightlife.

In response, Dallas inaugurated an arts district (DART) with a light rail network, Klyde Warren Park, the VICTORY Project, and at least 11,000 new residential units in the downtown area. Two decades later, Dallas felt better positioned to land Amazon's HQ2...lol.

So the lesson is that cities can have nice things in terms of economic and community development, their elected officials just need to take a huge L first.
