Every journalist covering Ukraine should really, really look internally. This is why I say we should stop pretending we have objectivity and in instead acknowledge our biases so that we can report against them. Many of us see the racialized analysis and language.

I'm going to start a thread of these incidents of insidious racism in the media coverage of the Ukrainian crisis, because I've just been seeing so damn many. twitter.com/MissChisomo/st

Not to mention that it’s ignorant as fuck about Europe, where tribal and national tensions means there has been a war roughly every 30 years since the fall of Rome. And not counting the Balkan Wars when they say “first war sine WWII” is more racism/prejudice.

I don't understand the shock. This is literally the land that had kill-the-Jew pogroms for hundreds and hundreds of years. It's the "Russian pale" where Russia sent various ethnic groups to eke out a living and be slaughtered now and then by locals.

So there is a war going on, and some black people still want this to be about them, and the racism they face? Show some human decency and wait till the war is over.

I agree it’s important to draw attention to this type of racism - I was not aware. But there are many reasons to be very concerned here that have nothing to do with race - notably Putin’s expansionist ambitions combined with the potential for existentially dangerous escalation
