We have to be able to talk abtthe harms of remote learning in a society where vaccines are available for all teachers without being accused of being anti-union or anti-teacher. We can disagree on what is the best thing to do when there are no good options without that accusation.

Agreed! Do you think part of the issue is that Omicron, even with vaccines and booster shots might make students and teachers sick enough to miss school, and so testing and masking become equally important? I'm just struggling to understand the issue with requiring all 3.

Yes. I think all mitigation efforts are critical right now. I’m not just tweeting as a journalist, but as a mother who has a child in a public school classroom everyday & also someone whose work requires me to travel all the time. I hv my own fears. But we have to be able to talk

I’m so sorry about your friend. But your tweet made my entire point. I very carefully worded it to say we can all be struggling with what’s the right thing without making accusations, and then you say I am being cavalier and disregarding teachers. Why do that?

Yes...and...the voices we must listen to, above ALL others, are the teachers'. They are the ones on the front lines. Just like we should honor, believe, and listen to our Healthcare workers.

I don’t know that I agree with that. Children and families have an equal stake.

Just came to say that people are so quick to dehumanize Black women when you disagree. You can disagree with someone without insulting their intelligence, dehumanizing them, engaging in misogynoir or inappropriately coopting language from Black activists to get your point across.

Child hospitalizations are at record levels. Most children are unvaccinated. Schools are prime vectors for community transmission, not just to teachers. All children must be provided the resources for remote learning, but the schools must be shut down.
