GOP politicized the process. Trump fired Comey and interfered with ongoing investigation. Everyone else in the investigation is a GOPer, including Mueller (who you said was a great pick for special counsel right up until the indictments started coming early and often).

Oregon Justice has a similar swing toward politics. A judge is being tossed into jail for simply choosing to not marry homos. I was contacted by a "secret" group which apparently made the change in the State's commission on judicial fitness and disability a few years ago.
