Why is there "new new year" and "old new year"? Because Japan did not (and still does not) celebrate lunar new year and tried to eradicate the lunar new year in Korea during the colonial times as a part of the forcible assimilation campaign.

"Seollal" is the better option IMO because "gujeong" is used mostly (I'd say almost exclusively) in a situation when there is a need to distinguish lunar new year from solar new year. As in: "does your family celebrate gujeong or sinjeong?"

"Gujeong" means "old new year", which Koreans often use to indicate the lunar new year. "Sinjeong", the "new new year", is the solar new year (Jan 1). But "seollal" just means "new year's day."

We debated between calling the lunar new year holiday “gujeong” (구정) or “seollal” (설날). Seollal - “new year’s day” - won out. Agreed on one thing: Don’t call it Chinese New Year. , help me out with this debate.

I'm afraid we are in an exponentially more dangerous & difficult situation with than we were four years ago, when President Trump took office. And life for ordinary North Koreans is tougher than ever before.
