Great article that reflects the current climate in education. I'm a high school teacher searching in earnest for an exit plan. Thanks for writing this.

I just read your article in Quillette. It was heartbreaking - and every bit of it reflected what I'm living through right now. The only difference is, I've been teaching for over 20 years.

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope it’s either manageable or you can find another situation - I feel your pain. Good luck.

i lasted less than ten weeks in public ed, after two years of training. i regret ever doing it.

I hear you. By the time my student teaching ended, I was seriously concerned but thought I would be okay in my own classroom. Not so much. Two years of school and $50000 tuition later.

"The student threatened that whoever snitched was going to 'catch the smoke' — a euphemism for retaliatory violence." I've taught for many years in Japan, Korea, China and Saudi Arabia. They are models of tranquility compared to American public schools. Ours is a broken society.

Student-teaching in America, then teaching in Korea has made me never want to teach in America again

Ms. LizardBrain, er Emery... I started a twitter account just to let know how much I enjoyed your article! I am finishing a book about teaching in Chicago and the active demoralization of teachers by the district and administrators. Ideas finding a publisher to take a peek?
