I'd also like to apologize to everyone who has just followed me for Toronto housing policy and is now going to learn more than they ever wanted to know about spiders.

Whole thread but especially this. You are not trying to elect a bestest best friend. You’re trying to elect people who are more likely to listen when you scream at them, because no matter who they are you will have to scream at them.

This is a good piece, not least for clearly explaining that there are already a few known human coronaviruses that circulate widely, and that cause 1/4 of cases what we call "the common cold."

Great thread. I should add that we have many hundreds of fireflies in this ravine where we live, even encircled by houses, because down in ravine no one sprays anything or uses fertilizer. Fireflies live their 1st 2 years in the ground, so you can kill them before they ever fly.

We have failed to share this world well with the other creatures who live here, and it's time to repair that. Help restore habitat. First place you can affect and help fix this are your awful, wasteful, monoculture lawns. Let them go wild. Weedy. Weird.

the burning question: can you say "tits" in the scientific journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases? the answer is yes, at least, if it's rat tits i censored the rat for you

I only learned "Laelaps" meant "hurricane" recently, while learning about mites, because I always just associated it with , who I realize probably took the name from *this* Laelaps
