Nevada DOT’s posts

It’s been 25 years since the Truckee River flooded and took out a section of I-80 WB lanes in Reno/Sparks. Although this was devastating for the Reno/Sparks area, new flood control efforts have since been put in place to reduce impact & keep our communities safe.

Avoid I-80 west of Reno over Donner Pass. Sections of the interstate are closed in California.

Crews are working tirelessly around the clock to clear I-80 of snow & ice. Route remains closed between Applegate & the Stateline. Whiteout conditions in some areas. Over 30 inches of snow fell on Donner Pass the past 24 hrs. @CHP_Truckee @CHPGoldRun @nevadadot @CaltransHQ

Did you know there are automatic anti-icing systems on multiple bridges along I-580 between Reno and Carson City? These recessed disks spray anti-icing solution for up to three seconds in order to prevent/delay ice from forming. Learn more at bit.ly/AntiIcingDisks

I-580 travelers – have you ever noticed the anti-icing systems on four select bridges just south of Reno? In the form of recessed disks embedded in the concrete, the spray nozzles are a bit hard to spot for a good reason – limiting distracted driving!

Did you know that Nevada changed its road signs in the 1930s to the green and white duo we know today? This combination was chosen because of green’s non-distracting, calming effect – it also helps that green and white are the easiest color combo for the eyes to read

Did you feel that? After an earthquake hit Carson City last night, we visually inspected 32 bridges from the Carson Valley to south Reno to Dayton for possible damage. Good news- we found no bridges to have visible damage relating to the earthquake. @NHPNorthernComm

Across the nation, it kills 200 people and 1-2 million large animals every year, costing $8 billion. Vehicle-animal collisions are tragic and potentially dangerous. That's why we partner with NDOW to construct safety crossings that cut chances of these collisions by up to 95%.

Don’t look down! Take a sneak peek at one of our routine bridge inspections. Could you handle the height? 👀 Bridge inspections like this are one reason Nevada bridges have been ranked the nation’s best eight years in a row!

Erica just sent us the following from the Reno area: “Just wanted to show my appreciation to the plow operator who pulled over this morning behind the NHP working an accident on the {I-80} Pyramid off ramp; giving protection to the citizens involved and the officers. Thank you!!”

In 1931, an 124-foot long tunnel was blasted through Lake Tahoe’s Cave Rock to create a roadway, bypassing a previously harrowing drive alongside the lakeside rock face. Have you driven through the Cave Rock tunnels recently?

It’s a snowy/slushy day across areas of NV. For safety, you’ll need atleast double the stopping distance for safety on wet roads- and much more for snowy and icy roads. That means slow down and leave extra space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. @DriveSafeNV

Onion roll. This truck carrying 50,000lbs of onions rolled on I-80 at Lockwood last night. Good news: nobody was hurt/interstate is open. Bad news: more summer storms could bring rain to northwestern NV. We don’t want any more onion rolls. Drive safely: bit.ly/2ONJG5u

Northern NV- it’s cold and icy today. If you must drive, remember to take it slow. The law requires that you slow to an appropriate speed for conditions-and that means traveling well under the speed limit when needed in inclement weather. nvroads.com @NHPNorthernComm

OK, northern Nevada, we know it’s not how you want to spend Sunday. But, if you have sidewalk in front of your house, it’s important to clear snow so everyone can safely travel this #FebruBuried. Many local ordinances even require it. Let’s keep all Nevadans connected and mobile!

Move it! Walking can reduce risk of many diseases, including heart attack & stroke. Why not plan for your family to safely walk/bike to school or elsewhere during Nevada Moves Month in March? It’s healthy, teaches young ones about traffic safety, and it’s just plain fun!

DYK-NV law requires that you slow down and move to the far lane when passing an official emergency response vehicle(s) pulled over on the roadside with lights on? And that includes NDOT vehicles working on the roadside. #MoveOver so #WeAllGoHome @DriveSafeNV @NHPNorthernComm
