From Sydney Brenner's "loose ends": Perhaps somebody will print a handy guide, preferably in luminous ink, so I can take it to seminars. Every one of them that I have attended starts with a slide showing the signal transduction pathway

It is amazing that some fathom that GPT-2 just needs more data to reach comprehension and intelligent. well portrays how misguided is this notion.

The partnership between the brain’s neurons and the glial cells that support them is mysterious. Glia are turning out to have a complexity that rivals that of neurons, and they are crucial to some quintessentially neural phenomena like perceiving pain.

One of the ways citation metrics hurt science: "Reviewer coercion: when a reviewer demands that a large number of suggested references be included in the paper revision (most written by the reviewer)... this inflates the reviewer's h-index/citation metrics."

A new microscope technique shows cells’ fine structure in new detail. The method, developed by Eric Betzig, Harald Hess + colleagues, combines 3D super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy in whole cells. Published today in Science!

This week’s 🧐🎩 is not an old one but on a very important topic: Compressed sensing. Two papers, that together have >40k citations in just a decade and half. "Compressed sensing" by Donoho

Yikes... He has some great research on nano-bio interface transistor-like devices. I wonder why this has been under the radar of DoD

Demarcation line between termites and ants....the question is, without central command, how do they keep peace if one shows an aggression? Does it spread like a chain reaction? Or does it stay limited to local fight and resolution?

This paper on the lab culturing of "the closest living relatives of the ancient archaeal host cells from which eukaryotes are thought to have evolved" is pretty fab. These seem like rather weird cells.

Massimo gave a very good pedagogical talk on this at bio-computation meeting. For sure, an emerging frontier is to tackle and understand how the thermodynamics and computation in biological systems come together. Sorry! you can not throw a deep network at it ;)
