Guys...BIG news. I'm writing a book!!!!! It's called "Models of the Mind" & will be published by . The plan is for each chapter to explain (in an abundantly clear & entertaining way ofc) a fascinating example of how mathematics has helped us understand the brain.

"Whatever else does or does not cross a synapse, it is safe to say that information does" -MacKay & McCulloch, 1952. Even before the resolution of the "soups vs sparks" debate over if synapses use chemical or not, the presence of information was clear.

Cosyne schedules are up! Be sure to come to our workshop (organized w/ and Matt Whiteway) "Interpretable computational neuroscience: What are we modeling and what does it have to do with the brain?"

Really important that we realise that we CAN make a difference. We now need urgent radical action to get these curves down further. Carbon zero 2050 still only gives us a ~50% chance of staying below 1.5C. We need to get there much sooner. We have the WAY, do we have the WILL?

His writings are fantastic. Brain, Vision, Memory: Tales in the History of Neuroscience is also a great resource 👍

For those interested in history of neuroscience, Charles Gross (who died last year) was a neuroscientist who wrote a lot of history. His work has been very helpful in my book research & I just came across his book of essays, which may be of interest:

My blogpost on how & why we use convolutional neural networks as a model of the visual system is probably the most read thing I've ever written and it's now been expanded & updated into a proper review article, complete with 136 references & 5 new figures!

Guys, I know we like to joke around on this site and all, but I just have to say, in all seriousness... ....moving a picture in Microsoft Word is really hard.

I should start describing my work as "rigorous" in the paper title. Who could argue with it then??

It seems the Soviet Union decided to take a hard line against the application of information theory to anything not man-made (in large part because the ideas came from America). Such a niche & academic stance to fight against...

A nice reminder to biologists that the "T"-word isn't necessarily bad, at least when used as a shortcut for the full evolutionary picture.
