Cool sunny morning with a brisk wind. Frosty after dark but then the rain returned. I am not liking the forecast of severe storms & very strong winds for early next week but live in hope that as usual things change & they are wrong.

A thread.... Just some of the well known examples of medieval and historic graffiti - birds, beasts, compass drawn, pelta, harps, marvellous masons marks and countless characters, it's all there be found at Gonerby, Lincs. Makes me smile anyway..

Can I recommend this fabulous little pamphlet - Key to Lichens on Twigs by & - without which I wouldn't have known which lichens we have in the (I used to think we had one green & one yellow species!).

Sadly for the lichen we also have small eye-catching candy-floss pink spots of a parasitic lichenicolous colonising a number of different lichen species across a few of the trees. Possibly Illosporiopsis christiansenii or Marchandiomyces corallinus. 🍄

We also have a few crustose lichens living on the smooth bark of trunks & branches. The black spots of Lecidella elaeochroma growing inside the buff-brown fruiting Lecanora chlarotera

Looking in detail at some of the lichens on our apple trees - the pollution-sensitive Parmotrema perlatum. A light bluish grey foliose lichen with black whiskery cilia (easy to see with a 10x hand lens especially if, like me, you are old enough not to see the eye in a needle!)

Our old trees, planted 20 years ago to conserve heritage fruit varieties, are now covered in different species of . Planting these trees has had such an impact on the diversity of the pasture - supporting a host of birds & insects who also spread wildflower seeds

I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.

Twilight sky on . For the first time this year a Song Thrush is singing its characteristic repeating song in the hedgerow as the darkness falls. Mid winter feels a little too early for its song but its a joyful sound regardless

Hunkering down in the lee of the hedge. The brisk wind has been excellent at drying up some of the mud but is bitter to be out in. Even the sheep seem to agree.

A happy distraction. One of Belvoir's more feline, dare I say more devilish angels. The late C17th Belvoir angel headstone of 'Em wife of Richard Burton' December 1695. Grimston, Leicestershire.

Happy chomping through their morning carrots. We took this pair in after their owners moved away & no longer wanted them. Unlike all of our other geese who don't see the attraction of orange vegetables, they adore their carrots & follow us round until they get some. 🥕🥕🥕
