I'm an American, period. I'm "Asian American" because ppl care about my ethnicity (sigh, why?). I am not apolitical - I'm highly political in that every public official must be forced to align their interests with their constituents, not in words but in deeds. 1/2https://twitter.com/maksim_ioffe/status/1416811825463664642 …

Points: (1) Statistics on crime do not make ppl feel more or less safe; (2) Ppl affected by that crime, especially in deltas over time, are not uniformly distributed; (3) Ppl want to make crimes seem both more or less than reality for their own purposes; 2/3

(4) *Ethical* policing and prosecution is IMO the goal. That means everyone follows the rules, and they are applied equally to all persons, no matter what. And that means correcting laws where they are unfair, and reducing "discretion" that police and prosecutors have. 3/3

Ok, but while we ideally might want a fair system of laws, what we have is unfair unjust and the 'discretion' of elected officials like our DA's becomes especially essential. For instance the average american commits three felonies a day and is illegal.https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704471504574438900830760842 …

Completely agree with you.. let's tear down those bullshit and pretextual laws. If a majority support Boudin doing it by fiat why not by law. Remember the same discretion a DA has at this moment is also given to police and some future DA who may not wield it as you wish.

I'm not advocating for anything, discretion of our elected DA is essential and a key feature of our existing democratic criminal justice system.https://twitter.com/ChasingPodcast/status/1293622979314593792 …

Chasing Justice Podcast @ChasingPodcast“None of you cared about prosecutorial discretion as this train was flying 100 m.p.h. towards mass incarceration. But now that I’m pulling the break up and trying to switch the tracks so we are going to try to turn around, miraculously you have an issue with that.” -@DARollinsShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

Well that podcast can claim no one cared but I certainly did. Prosecutorial discretion is exactly what allows ppl to be racially targeted for worse punishment for similar crimes or to let some go for the same crimes that others are punished.

I certainly care about how police and judicial discretion has been previously used to enable a modern form of slavery and mass incarceration.
and so does our DA @chesaboudinhttps://twitter.com/chesaboudin/status/1172034132437655553 …
