This would have happened even with “safe streets”. It’s a shame you use this murder to promote this. He was on drugs, and drunk driving. No “safe streets” would have stopped him.

Shame to deliberately confuse a traffic incident as justification for continuing historic and unprecedented mass incarceration.

Paul, then why is Boudin prosecuting McAlister over these deaths? I don't believe McAlister wanted these people to die, or even get hurt. He was just doing the same kind of drug/burglary/stolen car thing he's been doing ever since Boudin let him out last April.

If any of us got intoxicated and run someone over we too would face charges. Seems like that's what's happening here.

Mass incarceration of drink drivers?

Violence is what it should require to receive incarceration from our society. We wasn't violent before, this was violence and now he's incarcerated. But I do wish the road infrastructure did a better job of separating this poor driver and pedestrians.

McAlister had been acting the same way all year. The difference was two people were in an unlucky place. It seems strange that consequences start only when someone gets killed. Instead of before with all the other incidents of intoxication, stolen car driving, and burglarizing.

It's not that there are no consequences, it's that absent violence the danger is greatest from incarceration in this moment of pandemic.

That is very different from ending mass incarceration.

@chesaboudin isn't saying he's permanently ending mass incarceration even in sf. Just until we can get the prisoners vaccinated the @SF_DPH told him to house less people.
And while I might like a end to the abysmally failed drug war, he charges cases for dealers on the daily.

Honestly, that's news to me. Ending Mass Incarceration permanently is a movement goal and not pandemic related. And there are lots of places in this country that need it. Say Florida for example. Except SF hasn't done that kind of mass incarceration for a long time.
