Group chat is like being in an all-day meeting, with no agenda, and random participants. It's the modern communications conveyor belt that never ends, divides your attention, fractures your time, and chains you to FOMO. It hurts work more than it helps:

CTO: If we move our repo to a hosted service, what do we do if someone manages to get code into our product? Me: So, like, they check it in, it passes code review, QA, change control approvals, and is deployed through our automation? CTO: Yes! Me: Send them a 10-99, I guess.

I cannot recommend this enough. The part where talks about that he broke down when he got his green card, well, that is too close to home; despite that I left US after being almost a decade into the process and never getting the green card.

Something I've started doing with my Node.js apps/scripts is codifying all my assumptions up front in `assert` statements. `assert(process.env.SECRET_KEY, 'you need this key to start up the server');` It has really helped with debugging and onboarding others.

one of the great disappointments of programming is the realization that the more useful a feature is to a client, the less fun it is to implement.

Heavy metal is basically the whisky of music. Even if you love it, you gotta admit it's not for everyone. Some of it is smooth, some is harsh, some is like burnt hospitals, some you mix with things, others you experience straight, some is good, some is bad, &your mother hates it.

Sometimes I want to hear a talk with some no name company with only 300 employees and not processing a billion requests per second and doesn’t need to scale in micro seconds and doesn’t need highly decoupled deploys due to their 500 dev teams. What’s their problems and fixes?

The hardest problem in computer science is fighting the urge to solve a different, more interesting problem than the one at hand.

If you don't make training and development of junior developers a priority, the only way for the good ones to continue to learn and grow will be for them to leave.

When giving estimates, don't break it out into activities like "coding", "testing", "code review", "documentation", That invites your project owner to ask "How long would it take if you just did the coding part?" If you need perforations, make them based on functionality.
