I mean if most of the world’s population is bi/multilingualism shouldn’t the “bilingual brain” just be “the brain” with the monolingual exception to the rule being the modifer when necessary that needs to be studied?pic.twitter.com/8fsVGyZ1uk

I would trace the origin of the "bilingual brain" discourse to Peal & Lambert (1962) that purported to find cognitive advantages to bilingualism. They threw out half of their sample for not being either monolingual or bilingual and those normative views have been hegemonic since.pic.twitter.com/8YQaAzfSLU

I wonder how the field would be different if rather than throwing out more than half of their original sample for not being sufficiently monolingual or bilingual Peal & Lambert would have called into question the dichotomous thinking that continues to pervade the field.pic.twitter.com/Itwnj9Xv5j

I wonder when the science of cognition and cognitive processes began to seriously control for this variable; seems important

There should, in all seriousness, be indeed more engagement with monolinguals (or who perceives oneself as such; is defined as such) and the monolingual mindset. Much to learn and understand from these positions.

Yes. I would not call myself fluent in German but I read it and understand it pretty well and I think it makes a big difference in the way I perceive the world.

I wonder if there’s truly monolingual brains.
Does knowing “dialects”, “varieties” or even “variations” of a certain language count as being monolingual? What about brains that have taken lessons of other languages at some point but then not use them frequently in later life? -
I think you might be right, which raises the question of what exactly people are studying when they say they are studying bilingual brains?pic.twitter.com/Vn4YWAmurW
