Hi, I’m Black Puerto Rican, queer AND *from Miami* and would like to report: Miami (for me) is exactly like last night’s show—non-Black Latinas profiting off the culture + aesthetic of Black Latinxs with no actual solidarity with Black Latinxs and calling it diversidad.

MSNBC is also apparently confused why women voters didn’t vote for women candidates simply because they are women

Thank you for this approachable explanation of how a Language Architecture framework rejects colonial practices embedded in academic language in order represent & utilize students’ linguistic ideologies in the changes we must make to our curricula & classrooms 🙏🏽

I wonder if Rathers felt the need to celebrate our "American immigrant culture" when Celine Dion (a Canadian) sang "God Bless America" at the Super Bowl? I will be waiting for the God awful day that Justin Bieber (a Canadian) sings at the Super Bowl to see a similar tweet.

For those who will inevitably be like "OMG who cares?" all of us should because this discourse frames Latinxs as perpetual outsiders to the US. I mean for better and worse J'Lo literally sang she was born in the USA and Rathers still called her an immigrant so...

And for somebody to feel compelled to write to me in Spanish suggesting that I am a self-hating immigrant for disagreeing with Rather's kind of proves my point. Rathers: All Latinos are immigrants. Me: No we aren't. Troll: Todos los Latinos si son inmigrantes y hablan español.

The idea that successful Puerto Rican artists like Jennifer Lopez and Bad Bunny who live on the mainland or the island somehow represent some "very American immigrant culture" erases their US citizenship and the colonial relation that shapes Puerto Rico's relationship to the US

The idea that successful Latin American artists like Shakira and J Balvin performing in the US somehow represent some "very American immigrant culture" stems from a US imperialist logic that lays claim to ownership of the entire hemisphere

Since some people apparently need it spelled out for them it is inaccurate because both Shakira & J Balvin are Colombian and their primary residence is not the US. Puerto Ricans are also US citizens because of PR's colonial relationship to the US so they are also not immigrants.

I have gotten strange replies including a Spanish DM from a stranger telling me that I am an immigrant and it isn't a bad thing. Of course being an immigrant isn't bad. Claiming 2 Colombians, 1 Puerto Rican, 1 Nuyorican (and now apparently me) is both inaccurate and bad though.
