Today we’re sharing several changes designed to better protect data on children’s content on YouTube. Starting in about four months:

Hey, I make animated videos but they are not for kids. Will there be a way to designate this without age restriction? (I would give my content a PG rating)

The target audience is what's most important here (you know your videos best!). If your content isn’t made for kids, no action needed. More specifics/examples here: https://yt.be/help/pE5Q  and we’ll have more resources & content strategy guides over the coming months to help.

Yes, my target audience is not kids. But I’m worried the bot or whatever will see an animation and decide “oh this is for kids” without taking into account the target audience.

It’s more about individual video content & its target audience, rather than a video’s general category (e.g. gaming or cartoons). This is why, in addition to our systems, creators will self designate their content as made for kids. More specific examples: https://yt.be/help/pE5Q

This is what I’m worried about. Who is making the decision as to what is for children? I don’t make my content for kids (again, my target audience is 13+), but Karen who thinks “animation is only for kids” is gonna have a different belief.pic.twitter.com/JCBAUkOOVE

@TeamYouTube hey, it’s been a few hours and my question and concern have not been addressed. I’m asking you to clarify as to who is deciding what children’s content is and which creators’ content is being categorized incorrectly. My animations ain’t for kids but a bot won’t know

Machine learning technology will help identify made for kids content, as defined by the FTC (see D1 of their FAQs for more: https://ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-coppa-frequently-asked-questions …). Since creators know their videos & target audience best, they’ll also be required to self designate videos as made for kids.
