    These results suggest that, contrary to our original prediction, inhibition-driven modulation of cortical activity does not back-propagate to the inferior colliculus. This imposes a limit on what and how the cortex can regulate in sub-cortical structures.

    Beautiful work by Jennifer Blackwell, a former student in the lab (now an IRACDA fellow in the Fontanini lab at SUNY) with help of our postdoc Dr. Alex Lesicko and our collaborator Dr. Mariella De Biasi.

    New in eLife: We characterized the function of the extensive projections from the auditory cortex to the inferior colliculus. Activating the projections directly, but not suppressing them or modulating cortical inhibition, affected collicular activity.

    Life as a woman in academia: Male colleague #1 (MC1): I put a very rough draft in this google doc. Me: Thank you, MC1, for the great start! I just extensively edited the doc for the past 3 hrs. I think it's good to go. MC2: Thanks MC1 for single-handedly writing this document.

    I just found out that Walter Fontana has been organizing a seminar series on biology and information theory at Collège de France, and all the videos are online. A fantastic resource for anyone interested in the physics of complex systems.

    Dear graduate applicants headed for interviews, you will encounter two kind of faculty these next few weeks- the first group will see it as a joy and privilege (and a little impostor syndrome-y) to meet and interview you, and the second group, who also should.

    This study finds that papers with women first and/or last authors get cited less than those with male authors, and that this bias is stronger for papers authored by male scientists. It's sad that it's almost a relief to see that this doesn't just happen to our work.

    This paper suggests concrete steps to overcome the strong gender imbalance in citations, ranging from individual to institutional. Let's start by all of us doing a double-check before we submit a paper to make sure we are balanced in who we cite.

    Accounting for self-citations, & various potentially relevant characteristics of papers, we find that (1) Women-led papers (defined as those w/ women as first- and/or last- author) are undercited relative to that expected if gender was not a consideration in citation behavior;

    (2) The undercitation of women-led papers is driven largely by the citation behavior of men-led teams; (3) Undercitation of women-led papers is increasing over time, particularly within the reference lists of men-led teams;

    7 years ago, at my PhD Graduation, my Advisor gave me this picture of my last days in grad school grading papers, father-ing and finishing up my Thesis. His point was that Grad school had successfully built into me some level of multi-tasking that would be vital for success 🤓😎
