If an algorithm has "mastered natural language", I would expect it to be able to do some of the things language is for -- communicating information, receiving information, acting on the world... Not merely output something that statistically sounds like language.

Just turned down a pretty amazing job offer with a great company to do my own thing once again! "Startup" #3 officially kicks off for me today in a space that I'm super interested in - remote team collaboration & async communication tools! Busy 2020 coming up!

I’ve told this story in private a few times but it’s time to tell it publicly. How I Got a Lifetime Ban from AWS: A Cautionary Tale for Idiots on Computers (Illustrated with Larry David GIFs)

Actually, the "Future of Work" is just replying "sorry for the delay" back and forth over email with someone until one of you leaves your respective company.

The returning clause you can add to insert, update, and delete statements in PostgreSQL is such a nice simple way to crunch what is often two steps in to one. If you're not familiar with it: (PS. I cover this also in my course )

The trend of remote first companies is real. There are finally enough tools and norms where people can creatively brainstorm, align on work, deliver it collectively, and analyze the results without needing to stare at each other or the same documents in real life.

I don't write very much Python but I've pair programmed with people who have a handle on the language and read through source code and it's clear that knowing the standard library pays dividends. This is a nice blog post on the topic

The times in my life when I *least* felt impostor syndrome were when I got to sit with one language/framework/stack for a long period of time and build deep technical competence. Sadly, in the world of tech, sitting in one place also means you get left behind too.

I think most of us in tech are suffering from impostor syndrome to varying degrees. One source of that is the insane rate of change - new tools, tech, frameworks, stacks, etc. When you move around so much, it's impossible to build that comfortable and deep level of expertise

There is something quite sad about advertising a SQL course and then completely and utterly butchering the SQL in the ad video. Can you count how many errors alone are in this example?

Started digging in a bit more this morning in to serverless AWS (API Gateway + Lambda) and building some stuff with Chalice. Really cool framework!

It's infinitely better to hire a top tier generalist than a second-tier specialist. Top generalists can learn anything, very very quickly.

Love this quote from Chuck Close so much “The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work...”

My 5yo asked, “How big is a wolf?” So I Google it... Google’s first result is the option (in browser!) to place a realistic wolf in the room with us so we can walk around it and see for ourselves. Magical. The closest I have felt to a Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.
