Zoo is short for Zoological Garden, so it’s the other way around, it’s a garden of animals

This is where it gets fun, because the word “garden” comes from the Franch “jardin” and the German “garden” that both mean it was guarded with walls. In ancient times, farmers worked the land outside the castle walls while gardeners worked the land inside the castle walls.

So a botanical garden is walled space for protecting plants, and a zoological garden is a walled space for protecting animals
