I love you @neiltyson but you just commited the single most annoying colloquial faux pas—it JUST FYI. not AN for your information. I’m sorry, and I hate myself for doing this, but it really grates on me.https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/980464870452740096 …

Agreed
-
Misunderstood. I accept the criticism. But I’ll also note that FYI, like other common abbreviations, take on lives of their own. We don’t say “Let’s ask the NASA” for just that reason. Is “FYI" there yet?An entity unto itself?
-
yes an FYI is exactly that just like an RBI or a catch
-
An FYI is only a noun when it’s used specifically as such.
-
It's a vowel/pronunciation question it's an entity unto it's own and pronounced F Y I not for....
-
You can make that argument, but it’s a separate argument. Mine is that it’s a matter of brevity—when used in a sentence typically, it’s function is to shorten the words to a concise, easily understood abbreviation. We see the word, and read the words. An article is unnecessary.
-
I guess we're all entitled to our opinion but in mine an FYI is correct
-
Fair enough. It makes my skin crawl. Like some people and the word moist. And ugg boots.

His point is it doesn't need 'an' at all, just FYI is fine, i.e., just 'for your information,' not 'just a for your information.' Right?
-
Right. Largely dependent on usage. Err on the side of brevity. Ex: “FYI: Usage dictates there be no indefinite article in front of an FYI.”

Sorry but I'm with
@neiltyson here! "FYI" has evolved to be colloquially used as a noun form too; let it live
-
I hate you, & may your eyes burn forever.

I feel your pain, Charles. Not much stings so sharply as when grammatical rules shift and roll beneath us. The day they added "irregardless" to the dictionary, my soul shrieked once and then fell forever silent. Take heart, the sun will set and rise again.

Why does it need a “Just”?
-
It doesn’t. “FYI—“ is perfect.

But u missed Charles's point. He doesn't care if u did AN or A. He wants them BOTH gone! He's refusing to see an acronym as an object. He wants the acronym to be seen as the phrase it represents. But I agree w/ you, Neil. FYI is an acronym, and therefore a thing. Not a phrase.
-
*initialism. To be an acronym, it has to be pronounced as a word.
-
Thank you.....Isn't it beautiful how we're all here to improve each other?
-
....totally what I was doing. Not scratching my own pedantic itch.
